Hong Kong Disneyland Recognizes Local Students as "Heroes" of the Jiminy Cricket Environmentality Challenge
(HONG KONG, April 22, 2006) - Hong Kong Disneyland today honored the winners of the Jiminy Cricket Environmentality Challenge 2005/06, an innovative program organized in partnership with the Environmental Protection Department for primary students that aims to foster environmental awareness in Hong Kong.
The program, now in its third year in Hong Kong, has seen participation increase every year. As part of the educational program, enterprising students are invited to submit projects that address an existing environmental issue in a fun, challenging way to inspire them to learn more about their environment.
The two Grand Prize winners for 2005/06 are S.K.H. Fung Kei Millennium Primary School from the Lower Primary Group (Primary 1 to Primary 3)and S.K.H. Lui Ming Choi Memorial Primary School (A.M.) from the Upper Primary Group (Primary 4 to Primary 6). In addition to the 2005/06 winners, the ceremony also honored winners from the past two years to recognize the success of this worthwhile cause.
The awards were handed out by Bill Ernest, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Dr Michael Chiu Tak-lun, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection, HKSAR.
Mr. Ernest said, "We are delighted to honor our 'Environmentality Heroes' today, on the 36th anniversary of "Earth Day". Hong Kong Disneyland spends a considerable amount of time instilling an appreciation for nature and the environment in children through programs such as the Jiminy Cricket Environmentality Challenge.
"As our favorite 'spokescricket' says, 'Every little bit makes a big difference,' and all of this year's participants seem to have really taken that to heart."
Dr. Chiu added, "A commitment to the environment is a long-term prospect that begins from a young age. This program is a great complement to environmental education in Hong Kong because it provides an opportunity for our primary school students to think green and put their environmental ideas into action. It also encourages students to take a more involved role in protecting our environment by working with the community."
In 2005/06 alone, over 60,000 students from about 100 primary schools took the Environmentality Pledge, with almost 3,000 students developing their own class projects to join the Competition. A total of 71 students were recognized as this year's "Environmentality Heroes."
Over the past three years, more than 150,000 students have taken part in the program and over 200 primary school students have been formally acknowledged as "Environmentality Heroes" in recognition of their hard work and achievements in the Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge.
The ceremony was held at the Disneyland Hotel and attended by the Environmentality Heroes and members of the 2005/06 judging panel, which included representatives from the Education and Manpower Bureau, Environmental Protection Department and green groups. Also in attendance were friends from a number of leading local and global environmental organizations and our Cast Members.
