Michelle Kwan Visits Hong Kong Disneyland to Unveil the Specially Designed Logo of "it's a small world"
(HONG KONG, January 25, 2007) - Having completed her first State Department trip to China in her new role as American Public Diplomacy Envoy, Michelle Kwan visited Hong Kong Disneyland today to enjoy the theme park and unveil the specially designed logo of "it's a small world" at Hong Kong Disneyland.
During her tour of the Park, the five-time world skating champion visited a special display area for "it's a small world", located in the Opera House on Main Street U.S.A. which will temporarily house two penguin figurines.
The penguins are the first of many dolls which will be created for Hong Kong Disneyland's version of the much loved attraction, scheduled to open in the first half of 2008.
"I've been to "it's a small world" in other Disney theme parks and I love the attraction because of the message it sends out - it celebrates all the peoples and cultures of the world." said Michelle Kwan.
"It has special meaning to me because it represents values which are important for both my personal and professional life. We meet people from different cultures with different beliefs everyday. What's important is that we must learn to accept and respect each other's differences and individuality in the community."
Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Bill Ernest said it was an honor to have Michelle at the Resort.
"We are delighted to welcome Michelle to our Resort and have her unveil the new logo design for "it's a small world" at Hong Kong Disneyland. She is the perfect candidate for this special moment as both Michelle and the attraction carry a message of world unity and harmony." said Mr Ernest.
This was Michelle's second visit to Hong Kong Disneyland, having visited the Park's site before the grand opening in 2005.
During her stay at Hong Kong Disneyland, Michelle also shared her experiences as a successful athlete with Hong Kong youth in a motivating talk show session.
About "it's a small world" at Hong Kong Disneyland
A feature at every Disney theme park around the world, "it's a small world" is a boat ride attraction containing a colorful cast of international dolls "singing" the famous theme song, "it's a small world (after all)".
Celebrating the notion of nations, people and societies all coming together in global harmony, the attraction is scheduled to open in the first half of 2008.
The classic attraction was first seen in New York at the 1964-65 World's Fair before being moved to become the newest attraction at Disneyland in California the following year.
Walt Disney commissioned the Oscar-winning Sherman brothers to come up with a simple piece of music, for guests' enjoyment as they sailed through the attraction on boats - one which could be repeated over and over and sung in different languages. The theme song's lively tune added a magical touch and captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. It was soon hailed as a universal anthem for world peace.
For the first time ever, more than 30 popular Disney characters, including Peter Pan, Aladdin and Mulan, will join the existing dolls to be seamlessly blended in the countries where their stories take place. Enhanced with an expanded Asia section which will include famous regional landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven and the distinctive Hong Kong skyline, the attraction will also include a Middle Eastern scene and a new scene for North America - something not even North American Disney resorts enjoy!
The grand finale features the children of the world coming together from all the corners of the globe for a spectacular "curtain call" with some extraordinary optical lighting effects not seen on any other Disney ride! Another exceptional aspect of Hong Kong's own "it's a small world" is its classic facade, inspired by the versions in the U.S., Tokyo and Paris, which boasts a unique color scheme specially designed to take advantage of the different quality of light in Hong Kong.
